CHAPTER SIX
For the next two months Brit and Rane were together as much as their schedules allowed. She enjoyed giving him his lessons immensely; and he still insisted on paying her by reminding her that she was running a business. His skill improved so rapidly she switched him to an English saddle far sooner than she'd originally planned.
Rane celebrated his milestone by putting her in her favorite saddle. By then she was competent enough for just such a sensual ride.
For Brit, life was sweeter, better, brighter. Now that she was in an intimate physical relationship with Rane, her earlier anxiety over being hurt or falling in love with him had disappeared. She ignored the puzzling thought that occasionally came upon her: if only he loved you.
She refused to analyze why it was suddenly so important that he do so. After all, she would always love Jeff. Wouldn't she?
She reveled in the ecstasy of making love with Rane. She wallowed in the bone deep contentment of being with him. At the same time, she resisted the urge to lean on him, to run to him with every problem, large and small. Even if she would never love him, she told herself resolutely, it would be too easy to become dependent on him. She had to be satisfied with what she had at the moment, instead of making the mistake of expecting more.
Many nights she spent at his place in town, but at least once a week they had a "date night." They went out to dinner, and then drove to his place in the country for an intimate evening in bed, a night of exhausted sleep, followed by a lazy morning of slow and gentle lovemaking.
One morning, he showed her over the entire property. The large house sat in the middle of twenty acres, fenced and cross-fenced. A nearby creek fed a large pond. She couldn't help but think how perfect it would be for horses.
He accompanied her to all her shows, shouldering the heavy burden of preparation. He became an indispensable grounds man, performing the many tasks involved in getting her and the horse into the show ring. Before each ride, he gave her a kiss with a confidence building, "Go get 'em, babe," whispered quietly in her ear. Despite her intentions, she was depending more and more on him, and she alternately luxuriated in and despaired of it.
Rane deliberately encouraged such dependence because he'd never seen someone more in need of a little spoiling than Brit. He also selfishly maneuvered to engineer her reliance on him, plotting methodically to gain her trust, because he wanted to be the recipient of the soul shattering, achingly intense looks she'd given Stanford. He wanted to be the man she spoke of when she said so passionately, "I love him!" He wanted it so badly, his guts knotted every time he thought of it. When he held her in his arms, the feeling was so strong he had to stop himself from crushing her closer, as if by holding her nearer physically, they would become closer emotionally.
